Balloon up or balloon away? Examining the management of postoperative dysphagia following fundoplication
نویسندگان
چکیده
Dysphagia following laparoscopic fundoplication for medically refractory gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is common. In patients without an anatomic defect, it has been hypothesized that the ant wrap may be too tight. Therefore, pneumatic dilation help relieve obstruction. While retrospective data support this hypothesis, prospective are lacking. We summarize @GIJournal discussion held on February 17, 2021, during which article by Schuitenmaker et al. “Pneumatic persistent dysphagia after surgery, a multicentre single-blind randomized sham-controlled clinical trial” was critically reviewed our expert Dr. John Pandolfino (JP), and moderated Marianna Papademetriou (MP).

Immediate and Short-term Follow-Up of Aortic Coarctation Balloon Angioplasty and Stenting
Background Aortic Coarcatation (CoA) is one of the congenital heart diseases with the rate of 5-8% of Coronary heart diseases(CHDs). Balloon angioplasty is now one of the effective way of treatment for CoA, native or Re-coarctation (Re-CoA). We aimed to assess the immediate, and short term response to angioplasty and stenting, and also complications. Materials and Methods Balloon angioplasty wi...

Suboptimal breathing patterns and impairments of posture and trunk stability are often associated with musculoskeletal complaints such as low back pain. A therapeutic exercise that promotes optimal posture (diaphragm and lumbar spine position), and neuromuscular control of the deep abdominals, diaphragm, and pelvic floor (lumbar-pelvic stabilization) is desirable for utilization with patients w...
متن کاملVideofluoroscopy-guided balloon dilatation for treatment of severe pharyngeal dysphagia.
Balloon dilatation is a widely accepted technique in the management of esophageal and other types of gastrointestinal strictures, but it is rarely used for the treatment of pharyngeal dysphagia. Therefore, the aim of our prospective study was to evaluate the use of videofluoroscopy-guided balloon dilatation (VGBD) for the treatment of severe pharyngeal dysphagia. The study included 32 stroke pa...
متن کاملManagement of obstructed balloon catheters.
Failure of a balloon catheter to deflate is not uncommon and prevents its removal. Methods of overcoming the problem include traction, bursting the balloon by overinflation, dissolving it with solvents, puncturing it percutaneously with a needle, or puncturing it with a wire stylet passed through the catheter. All except the last technique have major disadvantages and are of questionable safety...
متن کاملBalloon Dilation in Sporadic Inclusion Body Myositis Patients with Dysphagia
Here, we describe balloon catheter dilation at the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) in three sporadic inclusion body myositis (s-IBM) patients with dysphagia. Initially, we performed IVIg therapy, and, three months later, switched to balloon dilation therapy. A 12-Fr balloon catheter was inserted from the mouth under fluoroscopy and the balloon inflated at the UES. The catheter was pulled back ...
